How Much Is Your Stuff Worth?

When it comes to home insurance, there are multiple forms of protection that you can get. To get the full advantage of these benefits, however, you need to do a little bit of work. One thing that you have to do is know how much your stuff is worth. Not just your home, but the things inside of it. If something is stolen or destroyed, the insurance company needs to know how much that something cost to reimburse it. Of course, you can’t make these prices up, you need to make sure that you have the actual price for an item’s value. This can go up or down depending on time and condition. Over time things tend to lose value until they get old enough to become antiques, which can actually make their value go up due to rarity. Though being an antique doesn’t always guarantee rarity.

At the very least, you should have an inventory of everything you own, even if you don’t mark down the worth. If someone breaks into your home you need evidence of things you own. You could use receipts, but not all of us remember to do that. It’s easy to give them a toss in the trashcan. Though one advantage of the modern day is that we can have receipts emailed to us, which don’t take up space and can be used to prove we owned something. If you do have home insurance, we would recommend keeping receipts rather physical or digital. Put them in the same folder as the inventory list.

Another good idea is to make a digital inventory list and save it to the cloud.

Physical copies can be damaged, lost, and really are not all that fun to update. With a digital copy it is easy to update, and being in the cloud you can access it from anywhere and from any device. Even if you lose everything in your home, you will always have that list to help you rebuild with. It has the added benefit of fitting all into one document. A physical list will require more and more paper added as your inventory grows.
